Southern Ontario Workers (25-65 yrs.) — Nearly 44% Are Working In Jobs With Some Degree Of Precarity

October 26, 2015

Sometimes I wonder if it is just the type of work that I do that gives me the impression that underemployment or mis-employment is rising, even in Guelph, which has one of the lowest unemployment rates in Canada.

The Poverty and Employment Precarity in Southern Ontario (PEPSO) Research Group released its most recent report The Precarity Penalty is based on a new survey of 4,193 workers conducted during 2014 in Southern Ontario.

Here are some worrisome findings:

  • Nearly 44% of workers aged 25-65 are working in jobs with some degree of precarity
  • Just over 20% are in temporary or contract employment,
  • Just over 23% are in the “other” category where their jobs may look as if they are in secure jobs on the surface, but their jobs have many of the characteristics of those in the temporary and contract jobs category
  • Lack of training and inability to access childcare can trap workers in low-paying, insecure employment.
  • Workers in Precarious employment are almost three times more likely to delay having children compared to those in secure employment
  • Low household income and less secure employment have more of an effect in shaping the ability of parents to pay for recreational and school activities for their children and also reduce the ability of parents to volunteer at activities involving their children outside of school.

Our reason for being in business is to help clients find their way out of misplaced employment and underemployment and to use our profits to strengthen the resilience of youth in Guelph.

The statistics seem depressing but jobs are still out there. It’s a big challenge but our clients still find jobs that they are good at; value highly; and love doing. It takes careful self-assessment to determine the right job titles that fit; the persistence to implement a top notch search strategy using a winning resume; and careful preparation to land the job in the interview.  So far our success rate is 97% and we strive to maintain that standard by working every week with our clients throughout their search.
